EXHIBITION | Ninefold: A Distributed Resonant Field + Plastic Reimagined: Material Agency & Circular Design

A dual exhibition about material, design, and a reimagining of plastic. The Reeves House presents:

Ninefold: A Distributed Resonant Field is a distributed installation of nine sound-producing artifacts that treats composition as a single environment where architecture, music, and fabrication converge. Drawing on the legacy of Edgard Varèse’s “organized sound” and the spatial systems of Iannis Xenakis and Le Corbusier, the project distributes distinct, networked devices throughout a space. Together, these devices synchronize, separate, and recombine nine interdependent harmonic voices—shifting between sustained tones, rhythmic pulses, and evolving textures—to ensure the composition is never experienced from a single fixed position.

Fabricated from recycled plastic, each artifact acts as an acoustic mediator, using variations in geometry, thickness, translucency, and surface articulation to directly shape how sound propagates and light is perceived. As visitors move through the room, this acoustic field dynamically reorganizes based on their proximity and position. Sound intensifies, overlaps, and recedes, transforming the installation into an evolving, embodied environment of acoustic and material relationships.

Plastic Reimagined: Material Agency & Circular Design explores the “afterlife” of plastic material, shifting the architectural focus from what plastic is to what it has the potential to become. This exhibition combines technology, design, and art.

Developed within a graduate design-research studio at the Georgia Institute of Technology, this project treats plastic waste as a frontier for architectural experimentation. Students sourced discarded materials such as HDPE and PLA from campus makerspaces and local recycling streams.

By merging hands-on fabrication with computational design, the studio transformed raw waste into a performative medium. The plastic was ground, reprocessed, and reconstituted, evolving from discarded scraps into sophisticated spatial forms.
